1. OBJECT OF THE GAME
8-Ball is played with a cue ball and fifteen coloured balls. One player must pot all of their balls (Big/Small).
The player potting his or her group and then legally potting the 8-ball wins the game.
2. IN ON A LEGAL BREAK
If a player sinks or hits the white ball off the table then it is a foul. All balls potted remain potted (exception: the black ball; refer rule 3).
Note: The white ball is then placed on the white line (inside the D if there is one) and can only be shot forward.
3. BLACK BALL POTTED ON THE BREAK
If the black ball is potted off the break it is placed back on the table as close to the black dot as possible.
4. OPEN TABLE OR CHOICE OF GROUP
Selection of a group is determined by a ball(s) potted on the break shot. If a ball either Big/Small is potted then it is the breaking players’ choice on which group of balls they wish to take.
5. LEGAL SHOT
On all shots (except the break or when the table is open) the player must hit one of his group of balls first, otherwise it is a foul.
6. MODE OF PLAY
A player is entitled to continue shooting until he fails to legally pot a ball of his group. After a player has legally potted his entire group he shoots to pot the black ball.
The following infractions result in fouls:
a) Failure to hit a ball of their group
b) Sinking the white ball
c) Hitting the white ball off the table
d) Shooting without at least one foot touching the floor
e) Moving any ball in any fashion by a means other than legal play
f) Shooting a jump shot by striking the cue ball below centre, therefore causing the cue ball to miscue or scoop the cue ball
g) Sinking an opponent’s ball
8. FOUL PENALTY
The penalty for a foul is for the opposing to get 2 shots. If the player is on the black ball then it is only 1 shot.
9. OBJECT BALLS JUMPED OFF TABLE
At all times, if any object ball is jumped off the table, it is a foul shot. The ball(s) is considered to be sunk. If the black ball is jumped off the table it is a loss of game.
10. PLAYING THE BLACK BALL
When shooting at the black ball, sinking or hitting the cue ball off the table is a loss of game.
11. LOSS OF GAME
A player loses the game if he commits any of the following infractions:
a) Fouls when potting the black ball
b) Jumps the black ball off the table at any time
c) Pockets the black ball when it is not the legal object ball
d) Starts to pack up whilst his opponent is on the black
e) Breaks his cue in anger at any stage of the game
f) If after 15 minutes of play you are behind in sunken balls.
g) In case of a draw at this stage, the first person to sink a ball is declared the winner.
Uni Bar’s definition of Potting/ Potted – “A ball is potted when it leaves the bed of the table and goes into a pocket and is sunk“* Directions of play given by an organizer must be obeyed.
